Julie Tartt, C.Dir.

A desire to better understand the world and make it a better place has been a driving force for much of my life. After completing my degree in environmental science, my husband and I hit the road with our backpacks. After several months of wandering, we landed in the UK where I specialized in environmental impact assessments for natural gas pipelines as well as environmental auditing/management at construction sites for a couple of years. After taking the long way home via several continents, we returned to Canada in 2003 and I joined the Canadian Climate Practice of ICF International.

Through 15 years with ICF, I built extensive experience interpreting climate-related policies, regulations and market-based carbon reduction programs in the Canadian and US context. I also gained expertise in greenhouse gas accounting in both the development and verification of GHG emissions inventories. Since early 2019, my focus has been on helping clients understand climate risk and develop strategies to thrive in a low-carbon world. To support this, I recently completed the Chartered Director (C.Dir.) designation because I believe that building climate intelligence on corporate boards is fundamental to the future of business.

Outside of Brightspot, I can be found cheering for my children from the sidelines at the hockey rink/soccer pitch, on my bicycle, or hiking with my dogs. In my spare time I teach the Sustainability Reporting course through the University of Toronto’s School of Continuing Studies, School of the Environment.
